Assisted living may be the right choice if the patient needs help with routine activities, like dressing or bathing, but does not need the skilled nursing services found in a nursing home.

Some benefits of hospice services provided in an assisted living center are:

• Visits by the hospice team (including nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains and/or volunteers) supplement the care the assisted living staff gives the resident.

• Hospice staff are available to answer questions or handle emergencies -- and a hospice registered nurse is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week -- thereby increasing peace of mind to the family.

• The cost of hospice-related medications, supplies and equipment pertaining to the terminal diagnosis is covered under the hospice benefit, reducing the financial burden on the resident and/or family.
